Can you send it by fax please?

I always thought that the day of sending a press release by fax were long gone, but apparently they’re not. A couple of colleagues of mine were talking to a producer in one of Ireland’s news organisations when they were told that they’d have a higher chance of having their release read if they sent it in by fax.

Are we reverting to the stone age? No, there is a much simpler answer. PR practitioners are abusing email. It once took time and effort to issue a release, but now it can be done in seconds to thousands of recipients. Journalists’ inboxes are just getting clogged up with spam, not press releases, spam.

Why do I say this? The same producer highlighted the fact that they were offered a guest for the show that was completely unsuitable. Obviously the PR practitioner in question had never listened to the show before. Is it any wonder why so many journalists curse us? I was going to add under their breath, but they’re more likely to come out and say it to your face :D

It’s all about relevance. Journalists WANT relevant Press Releases … but not all the other stuff they get that’s useless. I can’t understand the blanket-bomb style of sending pr - it’s only going to sully your name in the eyes of journalists.

That’s why I think a subscription based delivery system would work well - let the recipients pick there areas of interest and then get notifications of new press releases (not the press release itself) which then can then click into if they so wish. Creates efficiency, and I bet happier ‘customers’ (journalists).
