RTE online radio - what’s the frequency Kenneth?
Published July 14th, 2005 in PR in IrelandYou can listen to RTE online with Real Player. Real Player!? Thanks, but no thanks. Today was the one time when I actually wanted to listen to RTE and because they don’t have the common decency to use Windows Media player, I couldn’t be bothered. Anything the BBC can do, RTE can do worse!

The Real Player streaming format, not the Media Player format, is the most common/standard web radio format. The BBC uses Real Player, not Media Player, as their (main/only?) format.
When I was first using web radio, I’m sure Media Player couldn’t even handle streaming media. I’d say RTE picked Real at a time Microsoft had no streaming format.
The decency to use Windows Media ??? If I didn’t know better I’d say you were a Microsoft fanboy!
What they really should do is cater for everyone … the feed is RAW audio anyway, so why not just have a Quicktime button, Real Audio and Windows Media options?
That’s what in my foot-in-mouth fashion I was trying to say. I’ve only listened to BBC’s 1xtra site (No slags please :D) http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/ and they’ve got the option of Media Player or Real Player, what everybody should have. Given Microsoft’s dominance you’d swear that everyone would offer a Media Player option, but Ed’s hit the nail on the head with the option of all three.
Do a google search for “real alternaive” its a free bit of software that will play real audio streams without all the spyware crap.
