The BCI has announced that it has granted a ten year license to Channel 6, fresh off the news that City Channel is due to launch next month.

It’s interesting to note that around fifteen years ago Ireland only had two national radio stations (let’s ignore all the pirate stations for argument’s sake) and around ten years ago we only had two television stations.

Unfortunately (or as some deem fortunately) we now get commercial television, just like we are subjected to the joys of FM 104, 98 FM and Spin FM - same song on the hour every hour (oh the joys of the radio playlist.)

I have to say it is quite annoying when City Channel tell you that their programming is broke into fifteen minute slots because the channel is aimed at the MTV generation. Hey, I’m part of the MTV generation and my attention span lasts for at least half an hour - channel surfer I may be, but convinced about their strategy I am not.

All the same I shouldn’t be complaining, having more TV channels to pitch to makes my job easier. While some people may doubt the new stations’ potential, if City Channel’s advertising rates are anything to go by then they shouldn’t have any trouble sticking around for the short term at least.
