Tuning out from the long and rambling world of podcasts

I think the potential of podcasting is being vastly overstated. I used to subscribe to about four of them, but now I’ll just download them from time to time depending on their content. The reason for this is reflected in Eric Gwinn’s article (courtesy of Steve Rubel), they are too long and unstructured.
Steve Rubel is right for asking for chapters and show notes. The whole point of podcasting is that it’s radio on demand – wherever and whenever you want it. Until podcasts fit properly into their audience’s lives then they will never take off. I just don’t think it’s fair to call podcasting TiVo for radio at this moment in time.
Maybe it’s just that I’m part of the MTV generation, but if it takes you an hour to say what you’re trying to say, then I don’t think I could be bothered listening unless you’ve got shownotes or chapters.

I have yet to jump on the podcasting wagon yet, mainly b/c I dont have time to listen to an hour long audio. But dont get me wrong, I think that the medium is great and I respect the people who have taken the steps to enter it. I personally think that vlogs (video blogs) sound and seem more attractive to me. I look forward to this medium really taking off…
I agree Blake. I think vlogging will make much more of an emotional impact than podcasting. We’ll have to wait and see what the video iPod is like first though.
Quite right. Like blogs, a huge amount of podcasting is throw away rubbish, and that will only increase with time. What makes it more annoying is identifying the good from the bad is more time consuming.
