A word to the wise ain’t necessary, it’s the stupid ones that need advice - Bill Cosby

It was recently announced that City Channel plans to launch additional services in Waterford and Galway. The backers of Ireland’s latest TV station must be delighted because their primary Dublin service is due to launch next month.

In my opinion this can be largely attributed to the fact that companies are eager to commit to the channel because the advertising rates are so cheap. However what irks me somewhat is the fact that City Channel is an untested medium. There are no viewership figures to go by except for the fact that 220,000 could potentially tune in when the channel goes live in September.

At the same time, a couple of organisations are missing the boat on existing opportunities such as advertising on podcasts like liveIreland which has consistently ranked in the iTunes podcast directory top ten since it’s inception.

Time will tell whether City Channel will be a long term success, but I’m positive that sponsoring podcasts is an area that is going to blossom over the coming years. Why fling your money at TV and risk missing your target audience when you can invest it into a medium that the same audience subscribes to?

I may be wrong, and correct me if I am, but I think that liveIreland has been in the top ten iTunes podcast dircetory on the Irish iTunes (as opposed to all of iTunes).

Not much of a surprise, given the lack of other Irish specific podcasts.

Think you’re right Simon after all. Decent stats all the same - largely due to the Yanks I think.

    Hello again :)

Simon is right on the itunes Ireland top ten but we also regularly debut in the top 100 US version too. A first overall for any Irish Podcaster. Keep an eye on the 60-100 bottom section. More podcast formats on the way..details soon.
    Rgds, Sean.
