Who not to Hughtrain - Irish bloggers to jump on the boozetrain!
Published August 11th, 2005 in PersonalWe want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here and we want them now! - Withnail and I
Hugh MacLeod is giving away free wine to Irish bloggers. For once poor old Hugh has gotten it wrong. I love the idea behind it, give a load of opinionated guys some wine to feel all the more opinionated. Unfortunately I think you’d find that that you’d have just as much success by giving away Dutch Gold to Irish bloggers.
It’s going to spread across the Irish blogosphere like wildfire, land in the Sunday Tribune’s blogosphere and probably end up as heart ache in nine month’s time. For the sake of my liver I think this is one promotion I’m going to pass on.
I wonder if he’ll draw a card to mark the occasion: Irish bloggers + free wine = Lots of typos
PS - He doesn’t seem to remember giving Ed Byrne a free bottle during the first promotion.

Take a bottle and give it to me.
Have to really disagree here … or course Irish bloggers will sign up, being the alco’s that we are - but bear in mind how many Irish blog’s there are.
It’s still going to work out far cheaper to reach these people than it would to advertise. And besides, if you really believe in your product, why not give everyone a free bottle - because you know once they’ve tasted it, they’ll become paying customers.
Personally, after the bottle I drank, when I see it in the shops I will buy it - I really enjoed it. Okay, plenty of people will sign-up just becuase it’s free - but hey, that’s life. It’s still a better model than mass-ad’s.
Was Piaras not being sarcastic or should I assume not everyone is like me in the mornings?
OK, I should have written “first non-diaspora, non-expatriate Irish blogger who still resides in The Republic of Ireland which does not include the six Northern counties and has an orange, green and white flag (which is divided vertically into 3 equal parts) and has Dublin for a capital and has James Joyce to boast as their finest 20th Century novelist”.
Feel better?
Anyway, look on the bright side. So far this promotion has cost what a traditional PR flack would spend on a lame-ass nightclub promo in a small, provincial city. So if it fails, it fails cheaply.
And if it succeeds, the payoff is huge.
Damien, I think it’s fair to assume that Piaras is just a grumpy bo**ox in the morning!!!!
Sorrry Piaras, but you know it’s true … that rant above is neither correct or logical … get some sleep
And Hugh … why don’t I quality as the first Irish blogger … I’m Irish, I live in Dublin, in the ROI, I agree James Joyce is a legend, and I blog. Do you want my passport?? !!!!!
Ed you know me you eejit, of course I’m being sarcastic. The wine promotion has and will continue to be a huge success. I’m just slagging off myself and other Irish people in that we’re always the first to say yes to a free drink. In this case though I would say that you won’t find everyone sticking with it like every other alcohol promotion in Ireland.
Like Hugh says if it fails it fails cheaply. Although Corona did score massive success there the other week for €1,000…
PS forgot to add, I will revert to tags again.
Ahh backtracking … legend.
Don’t see your name on the subscriber list yet. Not that you drink much wine mind you - but you might actually like this one.
For some reason this poxy UI won’t let me write sarcasm tags.
Backtracking my a$$. You won’t see my name on that list for the same reasons I’ve outlined. If I took a bottle, I’d drink a bottle, get pissed and that’s it. I’d be drinking purely for the sake of drinking and I do that most weekends.
I’d rather let someone who’d appreciate it have it instead.
The UST is high with these two.
Oh Dear God … you’re SUCH a nice guy! Do you think by taking a bottle you are depriving someone else of one? Didn’t see that in any clauses.
And since when are you against free booze … you never seem to mind when it’s ME buying!!!
Get a room guys, I’m sure someone will even sponsor it.
Ed, though yes, you are Irish, when I said “Irish” in the post, I meant it as in “first Irish guy in the Irish leg of the promo to sign up”. And on that point, you don’t qualify, as you signed up during the UK leg.
Anyway, I am swamped with e-mails and blog posts these days. It’s hard for me to remember everything and everybody.
I’ll endeavor to be clearer next time etc.
Sorry Hugh …. only poking a bit of fun really! Don’t mind my clamouring for a meaningless accolade, obviously too much time on my hands when I posted!!!
