Never underestimate the importance of commenting
Published August 30th, 2005 in E-PRIf you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas - George Bernard Shaw
If you listen to most people, then it’s blog this and blog that, but they’re never quite so quick to talk about commenting. In my opinion, commenting is the second most important feature of Social Media (good content being the first). Why? Because it’s networking for the Internet.
When experts advise organisations to blog they talk about joining the conversation. If you’ve got good conversation points then people will listen to you. However a conversation isn’t just about speaking, it’s also about listening and replying, otherwise you’re going to end up like a taxi driver.
One of the main functions of my blog is to act as an educational tool for myself. I don’t regard myself as an expert in anything and I always hold a certain distrust for those who proclaim themselves to be the most knowledgeable in a specific area. To say that you have nothing left to learn is to reveal yourself as the most ignorant of all fools. You will from time-to-time get things wrong or change your opinion.
Commenting, be it on your own blog or someone else’s, is the best way to find this out. More importantly, by engaging in conversation through commenting you develop your thoughts and push things forward.

So true, and it’s amazing to me that the “A-listers” who claim to be the so called experts on blogs or social media rarely comment on other people’s blogs. Or at least don’t comment on any of the blogs I read, unless it is to defend themselves for some reason or other. Infact, sometimes they don’t even reply to a comment on their own blog. It sort of goes along the lines of, “I’ve made a post and the rest of you can discuss it among yourselves.”
