Accuracy is more important than speed

These days people seek knowledge, not wisdom. Knowledge is of the past, wisdom is of the future- Vernon Cooper

Ed Byrne argues that citizen journalism cannot be matched by traditional media when it comes to speed of reporting. Stories can be reported in real time effectively.

I can’t say that I haven’t noticed stories that will appear in traditional media a couple of days after I first saw them online in a forum or a blog. However, I would make the point that accuracy is more important than speed, which can be seen by the BBC’s decision to delay coverage on sensitive news.

Breaking news is only one aspect of the media. The first organisation to report on a story isn’t always the one that profits the most from it. It’s the quality of reporting that counts.

<sarcasm>Wow</sarcasm> so I heard that Apple and Motorola are going to release a hybrid of a mobile phone and an iPod through blogs before Cnet. However I bet I still end up reading Cnet’s coverage when they reveal details about the device.

There are cases when citizen journalism will prove to be more effective when covering a story like the pervert on the New York subway, but there are plenty of instances where traditional media triumphs over citizen journalism.

Citizen journalism isn’t going to replace traditional media, it will simply be incorporated into it instead.
