If work were such a wonderful thing, then surely the rich would have kept it all to themselves - Lane Kirkland

All the talk in Ireland of late has been about Eddie Hobbs’ Rip-off Republic television programme, but another interesting story that slipped by last week was the fall in union membership over the last ten years(registration required.) Somebody should get their skates on and try and get a union on their books.

Let’s face it, the majority of us don’t know what our workers rights are, but I’d say a lot of people feel that their rights are treaded on at times. It’s almost in the exact same vein of Rip-off republic, in that we know that we’re getting ripped off at times, but can’t seem to do anything about it.

So where to from here? ‘Rip-off Republic’ to ‘Tales of a Disgruntled Employee’?

There are two opportunities for the Public Relations sector. The first is to represent a union and help them with their communications efforts to reach out to the Irish workforce. The second, and probably more lucrative, is to
push the need for internal communications among their existing clients.

On the other hand they could go down this route - ‘Join a Union or the puppy gets it‘ (thanks to Stuart Bruce)
