Vision is the art of seeing the invisible - Jonathan Swift

I have to admit that I’m not that familiar with Google Maps, but I’ve kept my ears open about it. One of the best posts recently to illustrate its Irish promise is from Johnny K, who recently published a Google Map for recycling resources in Dublin. It got me thinking about a ton more resources and applications for Google Maps in an Irish context.

In light of the recent launches of Herald AM and the Metro, two freesheets that hit the streets of Dublin this week, I thought one good idea would be to create a Google Map of where you can get a copy. For the first two days I didn’t see a copy of it, quite bad considering I work in PR. On Wednesday though I nearly knocked down one of the distributors on my cycle to work.

However rather creating a Google Map of where it is available, why aren’t the newspapers themselves doing it? Think of how many organisations talk about how their product is available in a certain area. Saying something is one thing, but trying to picture it is another, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

Even in a viral context, Google Maps hold promise. Instead of the usual text routine for Flash Mobs, why not throw up a Google Map with the secret location revealed?

It’s by keeping an eye on these emerging trends and incorporating them into a coherent strategy, that PR practitioners will help companies engage with consumers.

    Hi Piaras,

Found you through the topic of your post when looking for new stuff to post about on my Google Maps blog. You have some great ideas for some maps - you should build them! :)

One my favourite Google Maps mashups is actually right in your backyard:

Drop me a line from my blog if you want to chat further. Looks like Ireland might be a hotspot for Google Maps ideas/tools.

    Mike.
