Businesses worried by blogs: PR Practitioners get your guidelines ready!
Published October 26th, 2005 in E-PRNever underestimate stupidity
One piece of news that has been doing the rounds is the Wired News report that 57.2% of businesses are worried that their employees might expose sensitive material in blogs (via Ed)
The first thing that all PR practitioners should do before advising clients what form their blog should take is draw up guidelines for their employees. As Ed says, blogs aren’t the first medium whereby employees might disclose sensitive information. They’ve been doing fine with email, phones and plain old word-of-mouth so far!
These guidelines have been a long time coming. I think blogs have made the threat more apparent. Employees need to be educated about what is appropriate or not to disclose online. I’m not saying that this should be spelt out to people, but an overall guideline would suffice. Someone people might view this as an exceptionally crude way to make money, but you should never underestimate stupidity. Just look at all the people fired because of silly emails.
