Death by boredom

This is boring! Now I know what people went through when…my Bronco was going up the freeway - O. J. Simpson on the televised journey of the Ryder truck taking presidential election ballots to Tallahassee

I went to the PRII talk on ‘The changing face of print journalism’ last night. For all the talk of death by PowerPoint, I think more should be made of death by the bog standard event. Half the attendees were there because they felt they should be, sitting in silence, rolling their eyes until the inevitable conclusion.

Why don’t more of these talks/conferences allow more time for questions/debate? I firmly believe that one of my positive traits is that I don’t always say yes. I might annoy people at times by arguing my point with them, but I feel I get a lot more out of things by properly discussing them.

Unfortunately there was limited time for questions last night, so instead of discussing issues we were treated to two speeches and a rant about the coverage of Liam Lawlor’s death in the Sunday papers.

I’ll be picking which PRII events I attend with more care in the future. More on the two talks later this week.
