There are three types of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics – Mark Twain
60% of Irish people don’t use email according to the latest JNLR figures. Personally I think that the research must have been carried out poorly. Anyone in a white collar job has an email address so i honestly can’t see how that figure stands up.
The statistics as reported by the Sunday Times of Irish Internet usage are as follows:
- 55% of people surveyed have no access to the Internet at home or for personal use elsewhere
- 69% have never bought a flight or holiday online
- 94% have never bought groceries online
- 60% never use email
- One in four people sent an email in the last week
Kate Butler, the journalist who wrote the piece, seems to think that the fact that few people are booking holidays or groceries online is evidence that online business hasn’t taken off in Ireland. I’m a heavy Internet user and I’ve never bought groceries online, but I’ve bought software, DVDs and music, so her theory doesn’t really stand up.
In my mind the groceries statistic is evidence of the poor methodology behind the research. They should know what people are most likely to buy online. I’d like to know what question was posed to the respondents about email.
Strangely enough, the piece doesn’t reference the Ireland Offline survey results that were also announced last week. Here’s what Damien had to say about the story.

While the Groceries thing is a silly figure to use the holiday and flights thing is astounding: “69% have never bought a flight or holiday online”
It is probably one of the most frequent e-commerce transactions by Irish people and yet only 31% of Irish people have booked a Ryanair or equivalent flight.
The survey questions could be flawed but I would have thought that JNLR is so big and crucial for the radio stations that they would have known their shit better than most.
I think 60% isnt far wrong. Of my family about half dont use it.
