TG4 - waste of time or worth watching?
Published November 1st, 2005 in PR in IrelandLove at first sight is easy to understand; it’s when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle - Amy Bloom
TG4 is an anomaly in Irish media terms. If you ask the dog on the street whether they watch TG4, nine times out of ten they’ll tell you they don’t and probably throw in a few choice words about what they think about the Irish language television station.
If no-one was watching it though, then how would it still be around? In actuality, whoever is in charge of purchasing programming should be snapped up by RTE or TV3. They consistently carve out niche audiences for themselves with great success.
Their coverage of Wimbledon was a no-brainer for pulling in punters. Their screening of cult movies is fantastic, reminiscent of how UGC is dominating the Dublin cinema market. But it’s their targeting of the teen market which is the most impressive tool in their arsenal. With shows like the OC and One True Hill, Irish teens and young adults are tuning in despite the fact that they probably roll their eyes at the thought of speaking Irish. Now even their home produced programming like Paisean Faisean (Passion Fashion) is starting to appeal to the masses.
While this probably goes against the purpose of the channel, it really drives home the point to Irish PR practitioners that they have to know their audience. TG4 is an unlikely place to connect with this particular demographic. So advertisers or companies looking for sponsorship opportunities targeting these audiences should get their skates on before someone else pips them to the post.

Is the OC etc dubbed into irish or is it in english?
I can see the point of TG4, it does make sense for the government to support the irish language. Lets face it, its better than some of the rubbish projects they throw money at.
With 100,000 poles in the country, I am surprised I haven’t come across ads in Polish in the media!
The OC is in English. They seem to making more of an effort to dub some of their better shows/films like Harry Potter the other night.
Tom - there’s two Polish newspapers now I think and a show on City Channel. Who would have thought that five years ago!
Excellent - I’m delighted to discover I am so far behind the times!
They’ve also got a pretty good music/discussion show called Ardán which throws up lots of interesting stuff.
Pity my Irish is so ropey.
Dear Piaras,
You are obviously so out of tune with the television industry in Ireland but you are trying to be an expert!
TG4’s coverage of Wimbledon last year got them 300,000 viewers on the last Saturday for the Ladies’ Singles Final (Source: Nielsen Ratings). So I would get my facts right instead of saying “Their coverage of Wimbledon was a no-brainer for pulling in punters”.
Get your information in order you clown!
Eh John, it’s you who is the clown. I was actually congratulating TG4 on their Wimbeldon coverage and said that it was a coup for them to get it. By no-brainer, I mean there’s no doubt it would be successful. Take the time to read what people are saying before mocking them.
