Tagging - what’s that all about?
Published December 1st, 2005 in E-PRA library is thought in cold storage - Herbert Samuel
If you have a blog or read them, you probably know about Technorati or Icerocket, or will have probably noticed tags at the bottom of posts with different words relating to the content.
If not, you’ll probably look at the title of this post and ask yourself, “Tagging…what is this guy talking about!?” Rightly so. Tagging is something that not only needs to be explained to the masses, but also to people like me who tag their posts.
My understanding of tagging is that it is the process of labeling information in oder to make it easier for like-minded people to find it. Sort of like creating a library of blog posts online. For example, a lot of my posts are about Public Relations so the majority of them are labeled PR.
This is important because it makes search engines operate more efficiently. Search engines don’t understand the words or phrases that you type into them. Therefore because they lack a human touch, they normally return information that is irrelevant to you.
If companies like Yahoo or Technorati want to achieve their goal of beating Google, then they really have to explain tagging a lot better. I’m a great example, I tag my posts, but I’m never sure if I’ve tagged them correctly. For the most part, I include a tag for my name, the relevant field of activity and any large brand names.
However, I’ve been tagging posts with PR for ages and have realised that I should have probably labeled them Public Relations also.
Isn’t that a bit worrying though? Here I am, an ideal candidate for the likes of the search rivals to tag my posts, and what I’m doing seems a bit haphazard. It doesn’t sound like much of a business plan to me!

Piaras,
tagging is very important as many people subscribe to Tags in Technorati - so properly tagging your posts will bring a lot more visitors.
I use the WordPress plugin Ultimate Tag Warrior to help me tag posts - it has a great feature - it reads your posts and suggests appropriate tags!
Try it out - you will love it.
I think you’re proving my point there though Tom. Why is it that I have to download another plugin, why isn’t there a simple FAQ or blog about tagging to explain it to me?
