Advertising is the art of making whole lies out of half truths - Edgar A. Shoaff

I heard that Eddie Hobbs had launched a blog, but a quick trip over to his site shows that he has duly been misinformed. For those unfamiliar with Hobbs, he is immensely popular in Ireland for his Rip-off Republic series which has sought to shine a light on government overspending, stupidity and how the Irish consumer is getting shafted by the man.

Numerous people have said that he should have a blog and I even know someone who was so moved by the show that they even offered to set him up with one for free.

Well someone in the design company behind his redesigned site , Horizon Omni Media, obviously heard the buzzword blog and thought that was a good idea. On the site there’s a section called blog, so I clicked on it.

The first thing that struck me using Safari, the Apple Mac browser, was that the RSS icon didn’t appear. A quick glance around the page and still no sign of how to subscribe. Another darting glance across the posts and comments haven’t been enabled. So can someone at please explain to me how this is a blog?

All it is is a diary page. It’s kind of funny coming from someone who is pretty insistent that Irish people are getting the wool pulled over their eyes because either someone from his web design company has done the same to him or they just don’t understand what blogs are.

This is where it gets interesting. The company also has another site listed on their homepage called Rip-off Republic, I clicked on that and it is a blog. So now I’m really confused. Why call it the ‘blog’ on Eddie Hobbs site a blog when it’s obviously not.

For those who don’t understand what a blog is, sorry if this all sounds a little silly.

EDIT/ Just a quick note to say that I spotted this story on Janine Dalton’s blog

well spotted! seems a bit strange alright…

it’s confusing calling it a blog if it does not have the standard features - those who are into blogs will be frustrated and those who are not yet acquainted with blogs may not understand what “eddie’s blog” means anyway.

it’s more like a “news and views” page at the moment, but maybe the site is not fully finished and a feed at the least will be added shortly?

    Fingers crossed.

I’m due a slap on the wrist also, I forgot to point out that I spotted this on Janine’s blog. Off to edit the original post…

Here’s the comment Ian from the web company behind Eddie’s website left on Janine’s blog:

    Hi all,
couple of comments if thats ok…

On the Firefox issue firstly, thanks to everyone who mailed us about that. It really had us stumped for a couple of days, we tried all kinds of things, prayers of the faithful, promisies to return to Mass and there was one moment when someone who shall remain nameless (yes I’m talking about you DP) even proposed ignoring Firefox “cause it’ll never really catch on”; heathen!

Anyway we eventually cracked it this morning when we realised it was a timing issue as opposed to a compliance one. (All the code is standards compliant) We removed the “display:table;” declarations from the stylesheet. Apparently Firefox renders the table layout before the content is loaded. Anyway we’re all grovvy in firefox again.

On the Blog Issue, I have to agree with Piaras, it is a “Blog in name, but not in nature.” All I’m allowed to say at this stage is that its early days yet and please bear with us as we ease Eddie gradually into the 21st century in terms of the web. Forgive the trite response but there are “developments in the pipeline”

thaks for the feedback though, really appreciate it.

    Ian (Horizon Omni media)
