Consultancy vs In-House PR
Published January 31st, 2006 in GeneralI could put up a long winded post about the merits of consultancy versus in-house PR, but after a recent experience at work I’ll stick with just one benefit of retaining a consultancy over employing an in-house PR practitioner.
By working in a consultancy you will naturally have a wider range of contacts. For example, if you’re in the motor industry you will obviously know all the motoring journalists, but apart from a few business journalists you will normally lack contacts.
The beauty of a PR consultancy is that they will typically have a wide portfolio of clients who operate in a variety of sectors. The overlap of media contacts means that coverage opportunities which might normally not have arisen fall into your lap.
The benefit isn’t just for media contacts, a big consultancy will use a variety of service providers which means they can source strange requests and also get things at the best price.

Yes, I think when you want to learn more about PR and develop further as a PR practitioner, it’s best to choose a career in a consultancy
