The Sunday Times appears to have been offering free DVDs for some time now, or so I believe according to the copy of Howards End that has been sitting unwatched in my DVD collection from a few weeks ago. This week’s edition really caught my attention though as they were giving out copies of Donnie Darko, one of my favourite movies, for free.

Free CDs or DVDs with a newspaper is nothing new, but I found it interesting that the choice of music of film is designed to attract a certain type of person. The movie to give away a movie like Donnie Darko is extremely interesting in the Irish marketplace because it will steal a couple of younger readers away from the Sunday Tribune which, by the editor’s own admission, is bought by younger readers because of the Ross O’Carroll Kelly column (something along the lines of Bridget Jones)

I buy the Times every week anyway, but for the first time ever I’ll be making sure to keep my eyes peeled for what freebie it contains.
