For all the talk about how blogs, podcasts, etc are changing the world we live in, the media landscape or how we communicate with each other, what do we really contribute to society?

Let’s face it, I’m posting this from a 12″ laptop worth around €1000, with a Nokia N70 worth €249 in my pocket and a video iPod worth €500 lying somewhere nearby. For most people blogging is like buying a can of Coke, for some it’s a privilege - a fact that we don’t really appreciate.

I recently read about Gavin Sheridan’s cousin who was injured in a rugby accident (Gavin is another Irish blogger) and while I was at the Irish Blog Awards I mentioned to a few prominent members of the audience that maybe we could use blogging’s new found popularity and leverage it for a good cause.

My initial thought was a charitable version of the Million Dollar homepage. Now I’m stretching for ideas. I’m after upgrading to WordPress 2.0 so when I get my redesign done, I’ll have the donate link that Gavin has on his blog added to my website.

Irish bloggers seem to be an intelligent bunch so I don’t see how we can’t come up with something to support this good cause. I think the last estimate of numbers put us at 1000 bloggers. If a quarter of those people are happy to pay €10 for a domain name then surely about the same number would be happy to donate or help raise €10 for this cause.

Blogathon anyone? If you’re going to absail, skydive or fast for charity, then why not blog about it and do it for this good cause?

I’d also like to point out that Wil Wheaton a while ago did a Race For The Cure (breast cancer, I believe), and solicited sponsorship on his blog. They (he and his wife) did blog about the procedure and training, and they got a good amount of sponsorship. This is not a new thing, but at the same time, I dunno…does it kinda break the “fourth wall”? That’s how it feels to me.
