The most basic PR resource – the address book
2 Comments Published May 3rd, 2006 in General, ResourcesFor all the talk of what is vital in PR professional’s arsenal these days, I can’t help but remember one of the first pieces of advice I received from a colleague – “Get yourself an address book.”
Given the large amount of telephone numbers and contact details you start to amass working in PR, it’s handy to have them in an address book, rather than use a rolodex. I know there’s people who would say that I should put them all onto my phone or get some sort of PDA, but my phone has enough work contacts on it already. An address book is a neat way to separate your work and personal life, as well as being your most used resource.
My address book should also make for interesting reading when I retire from the PR industry. I have to laugh at times when I flick through it and see some of the contacts I have there at the minute, ranging from someone who can get his hands on almost any animal imaginable to a tailor I needed to make alterations to some flags.

It’s true that you meet some unusual people in PR. There are times when I think ‘professional researcher’ is a better job description.
I still think paper-based address books are ridiculous. Anytime someone changes their details you need tippex, and if you’re out of the office and really need a contact number how do you get it? You just need to separate you Mac Address Book into Personal and Business, or use a different contact management program for work.
