Corporate branding 2.0

I’ve been impressed with Michele Neylon’s recent branding efforts. He’s made some desktop wallpapers available complete with his company’s branding and he also recently branded his iPod with his company logo.

While it doesn’t sound like much, it think it’s a good strategy for two reasons:

1. It propagates his company’s brand - while nobody is likely to download the wallpapers, anytime you see Michele out and about (I keep bumping into the guy!), and he’s got his laptop with him, you’re going to be exposed to the logo.

2. Blacknight Solutions is a tech company. When you’re selling something like hosting to people, you have to come across as very knowledgeable about all things to do with technology. Michele has his own company branded iPod. It might be cheesy, but to the lay person that makes him look like a tech guru, just as the fact that I have a blog makes me an expert on all things technology in the eyes of some people!

Let’s face it efforts like these help you distinguish yourself. It’s not often that you see a company branded iPod and people are likely to remember it. I’m finally about to pull my thumb out and get around to ordering a laptop skin for my PowerBook from Aspoke.

I met Bernard and Antoin from Aspoke last week, and had to apologise about the fact that I keep telling them I’m going to buy one, but never get around to doing it. (Still haven’t given them an image yet btw)

I reckon that they should really be directing their efforts at the corporate branding market. I think a branded laptop leaves a much better impression than using a company branded pen…I don’t think people will start handing out laptops though! I haven’t checked my stats recently, but I get a constant stream of hits for people looking for corporate laptop skins. If that’s any indication of market demand then that’s the segment they should be targeting.

I’ll post a picture when I purchase the skin to show how it turned out.
