Sly ways to make your customers buy more

I was eating dinner in a pub before going off to see a musical last night. I was finished my meal and was surprised when the waitress brought over a bowl of cocktail sausages when I finished my meal. I was about to say that I didn’t order them when I saw that she had brought a bowl to every table in the pub.

‘Oh how generous!’ I thought before my aunt said that it’s really just a way to get people to buy more drinks. Cocktails sausages are salty and people normally drink something after eating them. So the five euros that it probably cost the pub gets them a return of five euros for every customer that buys a pint.

Plenty of companies can do similar things. There’s no such thing as free advice. People typically buy from people they trust. Give people a free sausage, aka some consultancy, and you’d be surprised by the money you make out of it.

That’s why American bars serve pretzels, bars in lots of places around the world serve peanuts, and Irish pubs used to serve crubeens. Last I looked, the Brown Derby in Cork still did, but that was some time back. I have to admit never having partaken myself. :)

No such thing as free advice … are you charging for this blog now or don’t you value what you have to say? :-P
