Blog consultant? Give me a break!

Pat Phelan recounts a conversation with Keith Bohanna about the possibility of a new career emerging – a blog technologist. I’d have to side with Pat about it, a blog technologist sounds a bit like a Y2K consultant (remember those!) As my first year Computer Science lecture told us, Y2K consultant is a bit like a Window Wipers specialist to a mechanic.

The role as outlined by Pat of a blog technologist could be viewed as a subset to that of many different professions. There are many PR agencies, IT consultancies and Web developers that offer such services. I’m not saying that you couldn’t make money now out of just offering such services, but in five years time you’d better have diversified, especially in a market as small as Ireland.

Hugh MacLeod has a good cartoon to illustrate this.

You are right Piaras – this makes no sense at all if pitched as a standalone offering.

Blogs do not exist in a world of their own any more than email or internet sites – they are all possible tools for businesses to use depending on their requirements. If you look at the profile of the people who are starting to offer such services (myself and Tom Raftery included) we have much broader skillsets than the ability to tweak wordpress.

On your final point I would say that diversification cannot be 5 years away – it has to be at the beginning. The market now cannot support such a beast as a dedicated blog technologist – the service makes more sense when offered as a subset of an existing professional offering such as PR.

    Thanks for the mention :-)

Sorry but I’m going to have to disagree.

Even though you are right about the Y2K consultants not lasting long, I have seen a number of opportunities for blog consultation – including even my own consultation business.

Of course we don’t know how long this blog explosion will last but lets just enjoy it as it comes and continues!
