Online gaming and brands

I mentioned before how Microsoft are enabling people to make their own games for the Xbox 360. Unsurprisingly gamers are not the only people excited by the news. Joystiq reports part of the promotion for the new Toyota Yaris includes developing “a Yaris driving game for the Xbox Live Arcade.” This reflects a growing trend that brands are integrating themselves into the likes of Bebo and MySpace. However does this serve as a way to engage with consumers or simply stand out like a sore thumb?

In fairness, a Yaris driving game sounds as exciting as the ‘Tom goes to the shop for some milk’ game that I’m working on at the moment. I honestly don’t think that x-box live is the right channel for the Yaris to be advertising itself. Not unless it’s styling, advertising and engine size are all changing as well.

It is definitely a great way to engage. I am trying out my first try at this over at http://www.sheepstealers.ie/hurling/
It has brought in great traffic and more importantly great interaction with fans who are really getting into the spirit of the competition on their respective GAA county forums.
Sales are not bad either :)

I do however think it depends on the brand. It would not suit all.
