Mobile phones - Killing or morphing culture?

I find mobile phones effect on society fascinating. If you want a really simple acid test to see how widespread this is, just ask people the time. Look at how many people reach into their pocket rather than pull back their sleeve. Not only is the mobile phone killing the landline market, but it’s even damaged the watch industry!

Now for what I find really interesting. The Amish community in the United States are erecting their own telephone booths as the telecoms start to do away with their own. It is inevitable though that they will eventually be forced to make the switch to the mobile phone.

Lets switch from one minority on one corner of the globe to another, the traveling community in Ireland. While the mobile phone is forcing the Amish community to recognise the world that they wish to avoid, it is enabling Irish travelers to pursue their chosen path.

With the one hand the Lord giveth and with the other hand he taketh away. Don’t know if that’s actually a quote from the bill, but in much the same way mobile phones are having mysterious effects on our society.
