Irish politicians on YouTube

I was recently pointed in the direction of a Fine Gael video on YouTube. Frances Fitzgerald who is seeking election in Dublin Mid West has posted footage on the popular website. Here’s her video below.

However, what really took me by surprise was that she isn’t the only Fine Gael candidate with videos on YouTube. Brody Sweeney, one of Ireland’s most successful entrepreneurs and a Fine Gael candidate, has also posted a series of videos to the site. Here’s one below and a link to the rest of them.

With an election poised for June 2007, plenty of other Irish politicians will no doubt will also post videos in a bid to attract the youth vote. In my opinion though the main appeal of YouTube is how inexpensive it is as a medium compared to traditional advertising.

Dominic Hannigan and Thomas Byrne are also doing this. One has a habit of using the others name in their tags.

The VoteTube.org site is hoping to collect all these videos into a single place. It helps both the voters and the producers of these videos to be able to compare and contrasts, and to see what works and what doesn’t.

Already, after a few weeks, certain dos and don’ts are starting to emerge.
