Stray thoughts from the States

Just spent the past week and a half in the States. One thing that grabbed my attention about the ongoing discussion about the future of TV advertising is that the ad breaks are far longer and more frequent than in Ireland – no wonder TiVo is so popular in the States. It does raise the question though that when talking about skipping ads, there’s rarely a distinction made between Americans and Europeans. From a small focus group we did with teens, when discussing radio advertising we heard that many people in the group would sit through the ads while waiting for the next song. I certainly found myself to be a lot more patient with the remote control at home than abroad in this respect.

Another trend I’ve noticed recently the amount of small networking groups that are starting up. A funny observation in this respect is that Irish bars are great for finding out what’s happening in a city. You’re almost guaranteed to find the best places to go out if you get talking to an actual Irish barman at the pub.

I accept your comments on the frequency of american ads- the shows do break far more frequently- and that they seem longer. But I don’t think the ad breaks can be longer- a 30 min show in the US takes 30 minutes here as well. For that to work, our breaks must be longer (perhaps this is balanced by longer breaks between programmes).

Didn’t see any half hour shows when there. Meant to say though that those ad breaks were normally through movies.

well, i find it quite annoying with all the ad breaks especially on the likes of TV3 and yes i do know that they are not part owned like RTE which means thay have to show more ads for income..But over in the US the ad breaks just take the biscuit, i remember been over there and just eventually switching off the tv in frustration

Watch BBC World in China and you get ads there too! What a shock that was!

Was in Spain recently for a few weeks and the ads breaks there on one station in particular went on forever. We counted up to 30 ads on one occasion and then just gave up – the things you do in an apartment with no English language entertainment channels!!

Counting ads? Please tell me it was raining :)
