The importance of timing

Timing is everything in Public Relations. This ranges from meeting journalists’ deadlines to clashing with events that are firmly established in the calendar. Sometimes circumstances outside of your control mean that whatever you’re trying to promote will be overshadowed by breaking news.

Over the past fortnight I’ve been working on a series of events across Ireland with one of my clients in the education sector. We originally intended to launch the events on the day that the state examinations started, but I decided to move it back one day. The reason for this was simple. Year in, year out, the papers are full of pictures of students coming out of exam halls around the country on the following day. So instead of trying to compete with this, I moved our launch back a day and reaped the rewards.

By holding our photocall a day earlier not only did the client get stand alone coverage, but our photos were also used in conjunction with articles previewing the state exams. The end result was four pieces of coverage in the national press, all due to standing back and taking scope of the situation.
