Call for ‘the Simpsons’ Irish premiere to be held in Springfield, Tallaght – O’Connor

Local Fianna Fáil TD, Charlie O’Connor, is calling on Irish film authorities to host the Irish premier of the new Simpsons film in his home town of Springfield, Tallaght.

“The Simpsons is a popular animated American sitcom. It is a satirical parody of the “Middle American” lifestyle epitomised by its title family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The show is set in the fictional town of Springfield, and deals with many aspects of the human condition, as well as American culture, society as a whole, and television itself.”

Deputy O’Connor said: “A town called Springfield in Vermont, USA, will be hosting the world premiere of “The Simpsons” at the end of this month, following a competition with 13 other Springfields around the U.S. for the honour.”

“I think it’s only right that we host the Irish premiere in a town called Springfield and we have a large enough cinema in the Square shopping centre to cope with the crowds on the night.”

“It would be great for the people of Tallaght, the local businesses and the UCI staff to hold such a large event and I hope the authorities consider my proposal and roll out the yellow carpet on the night in our own Springfield”, said O’Connor.

Guaranteed this hits the papers tomorrow. On a serious note I have to say the publicity around the Simpsons movie is fantastic. Of all the stunts they’ve pulled so far, my personal favourite is the 180-foot painting of Homer next to the 17th-century Cerne Abbas fertility symbol.

Cudos on the blog. Long time reader but first time poster. Surprised you didnt cover the sopranos finale last week considering all the hype and the coverage it got. Would be interested to read any thoughts have on your next post, after all it is one of the best tv shows in the past ten years.

Simple answer – I’m still on season four of the Sopranos. Only thoughts would be that it’s a reflection of how intelligent that TV shows like the Sopranos or The Wire have begun that criminals are watching them to outthink the police. An example of which is the announcement by the Irish Government that they want to register Pay As You Go phones in a bid to target the drugs trade. Season Three of The Wire which aired a couple of years ago is humourous to watch in this regard. One detective brags to his colleagues that “If they’re [criminals] still using cell phones in this day and age, they’re mine.” As the season progresses it becomes clear that criminals cell phone use has become so evolved that it is near on impossible to catch them on phones as they switch quickly between SIM cards, etc.
