Creating a buzz about holiday destinations
Published January 14th, 2008 in GeneralOne of my discussion points during my presentation at Tourism Ireland’s eSynposium last year was that a lot of people want to travel to Ireland, all they need is the excuse. By that I meant tourist organisations, hotels, etc should try to create experiences that make their destination stand out from the crowd. As I’ve said before, marketers need to create hooks to get their target audience talking about their product service.
Two examples of destinations doing this over the last week are the Macau Tower Bungee Jump and the Killinaskully Holiday Break.
At 233 meters, the Macau Tower in China is the world’s highest bungee jump. The addition of the bungee jump is a very interesting twist to attract thrill seekers. Here’s one bungee jumper in action:
The other example I spotted through Google Ads last week was the Killinaskully Holiday Break. Killinaskully is the most popular Irish comedy at the moment (judge for yourself by the clip below.) This holiday package takes advantage of the show’s popularity and should entice some internal tourism to the region. Visitors even get a Complimentary ‘Jumbo Breakfast Roll’ on arrival.

Anywhere with a TV tie-in is a winner. Take Avoca in County Wicklow - home of Ballykissangel - although not on the screens now in this part of the world, it still airs in the US and other places. Don’t know if anyone is doing tours specifically about it.
Don’t forget the Wicklow Film Trails

I’m sure there are lots of other examples of hooks that tourism bodies around the country are using.
I have a vision for a “hook” in my own part of the world - Glendalough specifically. My idea is for an addition to the lower lake area that would offer something not seen anywhere else in Ireland. It’s been on my mind for years. One of those niggling ideas that won’t go away. All I need is a dose of capital behind me and I really think it would offer an extra reason for people to visit the area.
Don’t know if you heard about the Grand Canyon Skywalk but it looks amazing. The Grand Canyon doesn’t need a hook, but I’ve been once and would go again for that experience alone!

I didn’t do the Grand Canyon the last time I was out in Vegas, must do it next time. The Skywalk looks surreal, the only thing I can equate it to was when I was up the Sky Tower in Toronoto. They has a small window in the floor and when you stood upon it, your brain couldn’t make sense of it.
the helicopter tours to the grand canyon from Vegas are pretty spectacular. definitely worth it if you are tight on time - it’s a long drive otherwise.
the Sky tower made me pretty nervy too - it’s really easy way to lose all rational thought while gingerly stepping on 3 inch glass pane….
