Judging the success of YouTube videos
Published April 1st, 2008 in E-PRYouTube have launched a new metrics tool to help people track the success of their videos on the website. One key metric that a lot of people seem to overlook is the links section on any YouTube video. Lots of views doesn’t necessarily mean popularity, in fact it could mean notoriety.
Not to name names, but I’ve looked at a YouTube video recently which has almost 2,500 views. A little digging though and almost one tenth of those come from a website deriding the video.

Two points, one frivolous and one serious.
The frivolous one first. I found some odd links to my vids, one was an ask.com search page for photography by Emmett Till where someone had got the spelling wrong using my version of Emmet. Another was randomly from a band’s myspace http://www.myspace.com/neutickles
The serious one is one the question of ‘What is a high number of views?’. I know it wasn’t the point you were making but 2,500 for example isn’t a lot at all. Also keywords play a role. This video, by a friend of a friend, had relatively small views until they fiddled with the keywords and has gained over 2 million views in less than 14 months. I always think of this vid when I see people going on about fantastic viewing stats for corporate vids where they have 10,000 or so. As a rough estimate I feel that you ain’t ‘Big Time’ until you breaking 100k.
Argh forgot to include that link. The aforementioned video is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr2JneittqQ
Agree with your take on the stats, reality is a lot of commercial efforts flop because of lack of understanding of keywords and more importantly no interaction with the community, something I’ll expand on later.
Love those dance videos by the way.
