The Value Of Media Training

Some people question the value of media training. For those that think having an attitude of ‘I’ll be alright on the night’ is any substitute for key messages and preparation, have a look at how Sarah Palin fared on CBS taking the same approach.

Sarah Palin CBS interview - part two.

Even the Saturday Night Live skit of the CBS interview isn’t too far off the mark of her actual performance. As the Times points out, there is little difference between what Palin said and the script of the skit:

Mrs Palin in her own words:
‘Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and, on our other side, the land-boundary that we have with Canada . . . As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there . . . right next to our state.’

Saturday Night Live’s Tina Fey as Mrs Palin:
‘You got Alaska here, this right here is water, and this is Russia. So, we keep an eye on them. Every morning, when Alaskans wake up, one of the first things they do is look outside to see if there are any Russians hanging around. And if there are, you ask, ‘What are you doing here?’ and if they can’t give a reason, it’s our responsibility to say, “Shoo! Get back over there”!’

Then there’s a possibility that everything you say sounds bland and metronomic after you pass your first media training course. That’s my impression after watching several newly-anointed national politicians in Ireland and it’s also my experience after seeing general officers get their feet wet when facing broadcasters’ microphones.

Perhaps her performance was a result of being over trained and getting dozens of messages pumped into a brain that isn’t up to it. Especially in the second clip where she really loses it and starts spouting nonsense about trade and job creation it seems as if she is reciting key messages rather than actually thinking about what she is saying. scary though…

    Another example….

    Fey as Palin:
But ultimately what the bailout does is, help those that are concerned about the healthcare reform that is needed to help shore up our economy to help…uh…it’s gotta be all about job creation, too.

    Palin as Palin:
But ultimately what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy– it’s got to be all about job creation too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track.

Looks like they could easily have a stunt double if Palin ever makes President.
